Hands on approach for shropshire businessesBusinesses in Shropshire have a new way to boost the health and well being of their staff following news that Helen Goodall of Chi Holistics has been appointed as an approved reflexologist at Shrewsbury’s Natural Health Centre in Radbrook Green. Helen will work at the centre every Friday providing with a results driven service to people who are off work through ill-health or suffering from stress and therefore not working as well as they would like.
A number of companies in Shropshire already use the centre to help employees who are on sick leave, while others allow staff time during the working day to attend appointments. Some employers go further and provide financial assistance. In many cases, the small outlay (treatments cost £32 an hour) is repaid many times over for the company by a tangible result; their employee returning to work or performing better.
She said: “Quite often businesses are reluctant to identify workers who need help with their wellbeing because they don’t have the time or space for treatments to take place on their premises. Staff are also reluctant to take part for fear of being singled out by colleagues. Appointments at The Natural Health Centre are discreet and allow employees time to relax without worrying about their work.”
According to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), 1 million people report in sick each week, with an estimated 175 million working days lost to sickness absence, at a cost to the economy of £13 billion.
Statistics for those who have been off work for a long time also make depressing reading with suggestions that those off sick for six months have an 80% chance of being off for five years. Helen added: “The vast majority of people want to be at work.” Indeed 90% of people beginning a claim for incapacity benefits expect to return to work, but statistics show once someone has been claiming for two years or more, they are more likely to retire or die than return to work.
The whole debate of workplace health and wellbeing has grown in significance over the last few years with both the HSE and government increasing its interest and guidance to companies.
In 2008 a major review was published by Dame Carol Black looking at the health of Britain's working age population with many current initiatives springing from that report. It is also acknowledged that people in work are generally healthier, while being in work can help people with a health condition to get better and returning to work from unemployment improves health.
Helen concluded: “Reflexology is a powerful alternative therapy which uses the reflexes in the feet to identify stress or other conditions in the rest of the body. Working those reflexes can alleviate stress and promote a feeling of wellbeing. Quite often business owners are sceptical about its benefits until they try it themselves and I am happy to go into businesses free of charge to demonstrate the technique.”
Established in 1990, The Natural Health Centre and has been provides natural (holistic) therapies to the people of Shropshire and Mid-Wales. Helen joins a team of more than 25 therapists, all handpicked, fully qualified and insured.
When the service first started approximately 200 people were seen each month, now that figure is over 1000 including adults, children and babies with increasing numbers being referred to the centre by NHS consultants, NHS doctors, practice nurses, health visitors and physiotherapists. They also treat people on behalf of a number of health insurance companies.
